Creating a Pocket Garden (or Patio) for Your Vancouver Townhouse

Growing season in Vancouver is well underway, but there’s still time to get your green thumb on. “One of the most attractive benefits of Vancouver townhouses is that they often feature some form of outdoor space,” says local realtor Ariane Benjamin. “Even if the square footage is compact, the right mix of plants, furniture, and creativity can still result in a stunningly beautiful garden.”

For those with just a sliver of yard, a small space doesn’t mean you’re stuck in terms of plants or features. Take a cue from Houzz contributor Lauren Gaskill, but first, read on for a synopsis of our favourite ideas!

Modernize with Mirrors

Just like interior decorating, hanging larger mirrors creates an illusion of space. Your garden can look like it never ends. However, make sure you’re working with sturdy mirrors (preferably designed for outdoor use) and get to work creating your own private haven.

Potted Paradise

Not all townhouses give you access to dirt. If your outdoor space is a side or rooftop patio (or both), then make it work to your advantage. Use deep, wide planters made from rustic, earthy material like bamboo and terracotta to create a lush, urban oasis. Be mindful of the plants you choose, however. Make sure to pick specimens suited to sun or shade, depending on your exposure.

Create Connections

A small, forgotten space between buildings can be modernized with a little creative carpentry. With a few wooden planting beds and connected bench seating, even small spaces can be surprisingly roomy and beautiful. Brunch anyone?

Outdoor Living

If you have enough of a budget, try to think beyond the traditional window box. Today’s patios can be transformed with outdoor furniture, creative colour palettes, and weathered planters to create surpassingly elegant spaces for outdoor living that can be enjoyed all summer long and well into the fall.

Creating an outdoor retreat isn’t simply about peppering lush ferns, pebbled walkways, and rustic furniture around the property. Consider how to best use your space. Don’t be afraid to spread your creativity to the fencing, roof, walls, and floor. Creating a pocket garden isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s an invitation to breathe deeply, slow down, and create an oasis for your thoughts—even in the heart of the city.
